| Abstract | In order to relate property land size and the extension of deforestation, census data and remote sensing data were chosen. Brazilian municipal agricultural census data of 1995-96 from the states of Pará, Mato Grosso and Rondônia were used as indicative variables of the fundiary structure. These variables were compared to independent variables obtained from the PRODES project, developed by the Brazilian National Institute of Space research, providing an estimate of the areal extension of the deforestation in the period between 1997 and 2000. By the use of multivariate statistic analysis, a linear relationship between property size and clearings sizes was established. The variables that represented bigger land use sites contributed more to larger clearings than the smaller property sites. An understanding of the contribution of specific social actors to deforestation could help investigate for beneficial use/actor relationships following a less expansive and sustainable model of development. | |||
